BRIEF HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

In 1838 arrived the first group of professional actors and performed in public the play entitled The Decapitation of Hunyadi László (a Hungarian reigning prince). After the first performance several ambulatory troupes came to Sfantu Gheorghe/Sepsiszentgyörgy and the spectators could see some of the greatest actors in the course of time like Ecsedi Kovács Gyula and Blaha Lujza.

A hundred years ago the first permanent stage was risen in the building of the town hall. On the first stage of these surroundings took place professional and amateur performances as well. But for the first professional theatre the public had to wait for fifty years.

In 1948 the Workers Theatre from Cluj/Kolozsvár was sent to Sfantu Gheorghe and so has happened that it became probably the smallest town in the world which had a permanent theatre in that times.

The Hungarian Theatre from Sfantu Gheorghe had five directors until now: Bokor Andor (1948-1956), Kováts Dezső (1956-1968), Dukász Anna (1968-1973), Sylvester Lajos (1973-1985), Dali Sándor (1985-1992) and Nemes Levente (1992-). In each period the directors had to face the problem of the theatre which had been raised from its double function: to select the repertory which entertain the public and in the same time is trying to succeed an elevated theatre sample; on the other hand to hold the public’s interest in the neighboring towns and villages.

Now the most important aim of the theatre to create and keep alive a permanent inner workshop. The troupe is trying to formulate the traditions trough its own character and trough quality.

The work of young theatre directors Bocsárdi László and Barabás Olga, and the 1995 fusion between the Tamási Áron Theatre and the Figura Studio Theatre – one of Romania’s best alternative theatre groups – were essential for the theatre’s present success. The theatre workshop based by their work gained national and international appreciation and success for the theatre.
